When you order a spare part, you will often be offered three grades: genuine, OEM and aftermarket. They are not the same, and the cheapest is not always the best value. Here is what each one means.
Genuine parts
Genuine parts are made and boxed by the machine's own manufacturer and carry its brand. They are guaranteed to fit and perform exactly as designed. They cost the most, but for critical or warranty work they are the safest choice.
OEM parts
OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) parts are made by the same factories that supply the machine builder, but sold without the machine brand's logo. Quality is essentially identical to genuine, usually at a lower price.
Aftermarket parts
Aftermarket parts are produced by independent manufacturers. Quality ranges from excellent to poor, so the supplier matters enormously. Good aftermarket parts offer real savings on non-critical components and fast availability.
Which should you buy?
- Safety-critical parts (brakes, steering, lifting): choose genuine or OEM.
- Routine wear items (filters, seals, bulbs): quality aftermarket is often the smart choice.
- Older machines: OEM and aftermarket keep running costs sensible.
