Wear parts fail gradually, and catching them early saves money and keeps you safe. Here are the signs and intervals for the parts that wear most on any car.

Brake pads & discs

Replace brake pads when you hear a squeal or grinding, feel vibration when braking, or the pad material is under about 3 mm. Discs should be checked at the same time for scoring or warping. Most cars need pads every 20,000–40,000 km, sooner with heavy city driving.

Filters
  • Oil filter — change with every oil change.
  • Air filter — replace when visibly dirty; sooner in dusty conditions. A clogged air filter cuts power and raises fuel use.
  • Fuel filter — every 20,000–40,000 km to protect the injectors.
  • Cabin/AC filter — every 15,000 km or when airflow weakens or smells musty.
Shock absorbers

Worn shocks make the car bounce, dive under braking, or feel unstable at speed. Look for oil leaking down the shock body, and uneven or cupped tyre wear. Shocks typically last 60,000–100,000 km. Replace them in pairs (both fronts or both rears) for balanced handling.

Don't wait too long

A worn part rarely fails alone — worn pads score discs, a clogged filter strains the engine, and dead shocks wear tyres and suspension joints. Replacing early is always cheaper.
